Pick and Pick began as an idea in 2004 when Sam and Deanna Pickering found themselves driving 35 miles to satisfy their need for tasty, freshly picked strawberries. When they found 10 suitable acres close to Columbia, the real work began.
By 2006, the irrigation, infrastructure and perennials were in place, and Pick and Pick opened for business.
What began as a ‘retirement’ project quickly grew into a demanding, yet rewarding full-time job. After purchasing a winter home outside of Palm Springs, California, Sam and Deanna began contemplating selling the farm to someone able and willing to grow it further.
At the same time, Mark and Amy Pickering, (their youngest son and daughter-in-law respectively), looking for a change from their careers in the casino industry, decided to take the the plunge into farming. While this might seem to be a radical career change, any farmer will tell you, farming for a living is the biggest gamble you can take. And with the help, support and guidance of Sam and Deanna, we are confident in our ability to continue improving Pick and Pick with each new season.
